Shaft packing size 25d

Post by frankfurder »

Anyone know the packing size for a 25d with 1gm yanmar? I think it is a 1" shaft but what is the spacing between shaft and seal?

Boat is out of the water for a bottom job, any advice on replacing the packing? it never dripped much until a couple of years ago and now after a couple of turns on the packing nut to tighten it still drips more than I would like. Only drips when turning, not at idle.

I would probably go with the West Marine GTU Gore Shaft Packing with graphite fiber.

Thanks in advance!

The 25D is new to me so not able to answer your question with the highest level of confidence. That said, 1/4" would be my best estimate. Estimate based on size of spare packing kept on boat.

For a 1" shaft it should be 1/4". Double check. Remove some of the old packing and measure it. Even if compressed, it should give you a fair estimate.

Good Morning

From the 1981 owners manual found at http://www.capedory.org/cdsoalook-group ... inemanuals

"All CDY stuffing boxes use 1/4” waxed flax packing. Do not use synthetic or Teflon® packing."

Hi Bill,

I guess we are all soon to be past "it", if not already. What I appreciate is that you have helped us all.

Yes, I did read the manual per your quote, but, I was advised to go modern and use Teflon, as the manual was written long ago.

An excellent professional engine man did the job 12 months ago, with engine out to redo cutlass bearing and realign Yanmar 1GM (on the hard). No more harsh vibrations. Oh, I also had all electrics replaced with engine out.

After 12 months, I do now have a drip drip drip happening, while on the mooring, which fills under motor before overflowing in to bilge over a week! Tomorrow I row out to Breezy, undo, checkout, then retighten.

Fingers crossed?

Lots of advice here on what packing to chose and how to do it. I chose the Gore GFO which seemed to be the most recommended. It is not sold in many places - you can find it with a google search. There are quite a few negative comments out there on the Gore packing that is sold by West Marine.
Good Luck
