Northern Neck/Deltaville boatyards - Fuel tank replacement

Post by RMeigel »

Looking for boatyard recommendations to replace a fuel tank on my CD 27.
Who would be the best for this in the area?

Thank you,

Flag Harbor is too far north. My boat is currently in Virginia. Jennings boatyard in Reedville was recommended by a non Cape Dory person. Anyone experienced with Jennings?

In Deltaville, if you're on the Rappahanock side, I can recommend Deltaville Yachting Center. On the Piankatank side, I'd recommend Chesapeake Boat Works in Fishing Bay. I've done/am doing business with both and they are quality people. Good luck with your repairs.

For the benefit of all who are in the market at some point to replace their fuel tank - here are the invoice details from Rapahannacock Yachts in Irvington, VA:

The yard labor rates were billed at $75 per hour:

$223.13 Roundtrip travel to assess and measure fuel tank (Irvington to Lancaster, VA)
$467.55 Remove old tank, deliver it to subcontractor to use as a model.
$321.00 Charge by subcontractor to fabricate a new custom aluminum tank
$531.75 Labor to install new tank, modify opening because the custom tank was not a duplicate in size as originally ordered
$ 35.82 Parts & Fuel (they removed a half a tank of fuel then charged me for 6 gallons replacement fuel @$4.10/gal)

Total on original invoice that is fuel tank related: $1,579.25
Credit allowed for difficulties due to failure of new tank to match dimensions of old tank: $175.50

Net cost to replace 11 gallon fuel tank: $1,403.75

Did you have to fight to get the credit because of the tank mismatch or did they offer that up themselves?

I had to ask. The dialog started with me questioning why the opening had to be enlarged when I had paid for a custom dimensioned tank. (The cost from the subcontractor for the custom alumnimum tank, by the way, was highly competitive with off the shelf plastic tanks that were not optimally configured.)

Yikes !.......... I realize some of us don't have the ability, time , or desire to DIY. I couldn't justify my boating if I had to surrender to these charges.
