CD 28 conversion to cutter rig

Post by Paul Grecay »

My CD 28 has a nice big Harken roller furling for the genoa on the head stay. Sometimes, I lower the genny and raise the working jib in the the foil track. I have rigged the club foot so I can sail with the self tender and still roll up the sail with the Harken. However, it is very inconvenient to change sails so I am considering rigging the working jib permanently by adding a stay about 1.5 feet aft of the head stay. This would enable me to use the working jib (either as a hanked on or roller furled sail) without removing the genny on the head stay (like a cutter rig). The working jib would probably need to be recut. Has anyone done this? I would welcome any opinions on this change. I am not assuming that the boat would sail well with both the genny and working jib...I am mainly interested in being able to roll up the genny and set the smaller self tending jib when conditions warrant. Any thoughts???? Thanks!

I have a temporary inner that I can rig with the working jib. It consists of a left over wire luff that goes on the stem fitting just behind the roller furler and is then cranked tight with the jib halyard. (The roller furler has an internal halyard.) I then can use the spin halyard for the working jib. The temp inner is clipped to a padeye near the shrouds when not in use.

It works fairly well and the working jib sits just inches behind the furled genoa.
