19 typhoon ... Florida keys to abaco bahamas

Post by Keyscaptainadam »

Any typhoon owners with some input on a stream crossing in a 19?

Ive crossed alone severl times in a 27 catalina and feel with a good S SW pre frontal push in late spring ... The 19 would love the trip across....

Flor del Sol would reside on green turtle at AYS and be well suited to the sea of abaco.

Have good sails, all new running rigging, asy spi, spare tiller, good foulies, and the chutzpah to shove off....

Considerations for singlehanding worth disussing on blog ...

Spare fuel ...
Jacklines and harness
Bilge pump ... Manual install
Poor drainage in cockpit drains and rudder post intrusion of water ... Increase in weight aboard may be an issue
Tiller pilot with battery and solar panel for steering assistance
Water tank in fwd compartment .... Flexible ... Weight in bow an issue?

My biggest concern of the trip is having to hand steer for the 12 hour / 60 mile jaunt from Miami's governors cut to the East end of Grand Bahama.

Any input on the lightest and most effcient type of battery to utilize and the solar panel required to rejuice some amps once i make it to the other side....

I was thinking a SPOT reciever with GPS, TEXT messaging, and 911 button would do the trick.

I"ve done the crossing before in 1996 and again in 2001 aboard a 27 catalina singlehanded and didnt carry an EPIRB.

My real concern is the lack of space aboard and limited towing ability to bring along a dink, inflatable, etc.

considering a SUP towed astern as a last resort. At least it will float in the worst of seas. And i've towed it successfully before behind my 25 cape dory.

What else?
