Synthetic standing rigging

Post by nosara »

Has anyone used POWERLITE PBO synthetic standing rigging. If so how did it compare to Stainless Steel. Ive only dealt with Stainless but this looked interesting as an alternative.

There was an article in SAIL magazine a couple of months back, covering the rerigging of a Cape Dory with synthetic standing rigging. You might get some pointers there.

Samson Rope has synthetic rigging - known as Amsteel - other companies have other names, but virtually same product.
It is lower in weight and stronger than stainless, but it creeps/stretches at the molecular level, meaning that it will always need to be adjusted.
Great on a race boat, maybe not so much on a cruiser.
I talked to Dave at Samson when he was at the Seattle Boat Show in January.
Because of the constant stretch, I re-rigged with Hayn Hi-MOD fittings and regular SS wire.

I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request. Means no.
