Wanted: Weekender mainsail with reef points

Post by tom ricks »

Some recent gusts have persuaded me that I really do need a mainsail with reef points. I sail a Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender. If you have a used mainsail in pretty good shape, I am interested.
Thanks,

Hi Tom, I also sail a Ty Weekender up here in Maine. Since the season is short and coming to a close sooner than we may desire, I would suggest waiting until you are hauled for the winter and then send your mainsail to "Sail Care" for refurbishing. I had reef points added to a mainsail back in 2007 and it cost $65 per reef line. Their website is http://sailcare.com/ and they have received good feedback from CDSOA members.

If you have an original boom, then you have "roller reefing" available. If you are not familiar with that technique, it is just a matter of pulling the boom aft and roll your mainsail to shorten. Of course you should have a way to haul the reefed sail out tight which calls for additional cringles. However, in a pinch, I used this method once and it gave me the control I needed to sail back to my mooring.

Thanks! That explains why the mainsail has no reef points. I was puzzled. I'll go play with the boom today.
Best,
Tom
