Mildewed settee cushions

Post by Dick Kobayashi »

OK, I have tried a lot of products to clean the embedded mildew out of my 1983 herculon settee cushions. TSP, water and bleach, foaming cleaners, etc. At best the results are marginal. You may ask why I don't remove the covers and wash in a washing machine. I can't get them off - because the zippers are broken or non functional and I would never be able to get them back on - even if I were able to get them off. So I am looking for advice on the BEST product and technique to remove the black mildew while the covers are on the cushions. Is there a product that can perform this magic?

I have had good results with Amazon's Mildew Stain Away and West Marine's mildew product. Test them first before using on the entire cushion.

I have had very good results with Spray Nine brand "Patio Furniture Cleaner" UPC code 7717415606. Should be available at your local Ace Hardware. If not you can order it on-line.

I second Amazon's Mildew Stain Away. Read and follow directions carefully and you will be very pleased with the results.

Here's a Plan B that worked for us. Our cushion zippers were fused together and we wanted new foam but did not want to spend a fortune on new covers. We removed the old zippers and sewed in new zippers. It wasn't too hard or time consuming. Then you can remove the old covers and treat them in whatever way you wish.

When I got Saga, no one had been on board for 3 years and the interior was black with mold. I thought the cushions would be toast. I cleaned them with "Tough Stuff". It is a spray car upholstry cleaner. You can get it at Auto Zone and sometimes they have it at Dollar General. It was amazing!
