Commisioning mishap

Post by Philip Tanner »

I will spare everyone my stupidity. Suffice it to say that during commisioning of my CD 28 an original peice of Cape Dory hardware was lost overboard in about 6 feet of murky muddy water. It's that round peice of bronze that fits over the anchor chain hole in the deck. It has a hook on it that hooks onto one of the chain links and keeps the peice down. Does anyone know where I can purchase a replacement? Would Sparten carry these peices? I wouldn't think it's a high demand peice and may not be carried in stock. Any help in finding a replacement is appreciated.

The part is in the Spartan online catalog. It's called a Rope Pipe Cover and is part # C189 or C189 PB if you want the polished bronze.

Just consider it an offering to King Neptune, I think we have all had a few of those, mine have been mostly tools and fasteners,
I suspect bronze will make him real happy!

Spartan Catalog is available online, look under "chain deck covers" (look for index on left of page, about the 4th item down)

Was your mishap a one bouncer or a two bouncer? Mine is usually a two bouncer which gives you the impression that you can catch the item before it goes overboard, but of course it is Murphy's way of teasing you and it is always just out of my reach.

I hear they invented a bronze that floats and stays shiny forever... but the patent was purchased then mothballed by some evil empire on a grassy knoll (I think that covers all of the conspiracy theories).

Hi Philip,
I think I have one off my CD28. Send me a PM with your email and I can send you a picture of what I have.

At the bottom of the St. Peter's Canal, at the entrance to the Bras 'd Orr lakes, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The little chain that attaches it to the deck failed when we were securing the anchor on the foredeck getting ready to go to sea for the trip back to Maryland. Despite my authoritative commands, the crew could not stand the cold water long enough, and the canal is deep enough that it was never actually located. I bought a new one from Spartan.

good luck
