Keel Stepped Masts?
Concerning the Cape Dory 26,27, and 28, which of these boats have a keel stepped mast. Thank you, Kevin

Re: Keel Stepped Masts?
Kevin, I am pretty sure the answer is "none of the above." I believe, the shortest CD with a keel stepped mast is the CD31. The smaller CD's are stepped on the coach roof with compression post in the cabin.

Thank you Bob for your reply I wasn't sure and tried looking at the pictures. I have sailed a lot of small boats and recently purchased a C Dory 16 powerboat. Great boat, but I want to get back to a sailboat. Was considering the 27 or 28 for their weekendability?. Also like the 25D I believe with the forward head. Kevin

My CD270, Hull #1, has a keel stepped mast. Do not know if there are others.

Any one of the 25D, 27 and 28 will suffice for a weekend or a circumnavigation. How many people/pets/etc., are you planning on taking with you?sunfishman wrote:Thank you Bob for your reply I wasn't sure and tried looking at the pictures. Just 2 people total for weekends, either western Long Island Sound or NY Finger Lakes. Kevin

Compression Posts??
I'm not sure that's a true statement. My former CD30 did not have a compression post. Interesting that Bob's apparently does .
Edit: Perhaps I should re-phrase that. I'm not sure it's an accurate statement. Bob always makes true statements.

Re: Keel Stepped Masts?
Raven, a CD-30, is deck stepped with a steel support structure that spreads the compression loads to the bulkheads in the cabin. I believe the 28s are set up the same. No compression post is necessary as the bulkheads carry all the load.
No worries about leaks at the base of the mast either. It is a rather elegant solution to supporting the mast, Steve.
