Stuffing box CD30 Ketch?

Post by Michael Stephano »

After attempting to get a wrench on this I realized there was no room to take turns let alone crack the gland nuts on my stuffing box. Any tricks out there to loosen these up so I can repack this bugger? Volvo with a Vdrive. I am at the point that I believe it would be easyer to remove the V drive to give me clear room to do the job properly.

I'm also interested in hearing about either the prop shaft packing gland/stuffing box and/or the rudder packing gland/stuffing box. I have to replace both stuffing boxes' black hoses this fall after haulout, as they are cracked and crazed. Are there any better options as far as the stuffing box goes? Fiberglassed in alternatives? We will stay with the teflon dripless packing however, as it seems to work well.

A hammer and screw driver or blunted chisel work fine. Just place the tip of the screw driver/chisel on one of the raised tangs on the side of the nut and hit it with the hammer. Just remember to choose a tang on the side of the nut that will turn it in the right direction.

Worked great! The interesting thing was when I finnally got it apart the only thing that had failed was the dripless putty that was sandwiched in between the flax. Cut new Flax and reinstalled the old fashioned way.
