Ty Daysailers - List of Known Models K and Gs

Not meaning to be critical - just trying to nail down some Cape Dory facts

Contrary to what is listed on the "About Cape Dorys" page stating that the Daysailers were built from '77 to '86, they clearly built the Model G (fully open) Daysailer prior to 1977. There are Model Gs listed in the registry that are from '75 to '77.

And given the overlapping hull numbers, the total number of Daysailers is closer to 200+ (includes Model K with the small cuddy and Model G that is fully open, but excludes the Weekender).

It’s fairly well documented that the Model G was designed for a Northeast college as a training sailboat, but that fell through so Cape Dory started marketing them to the public. Does anyone know if they possibly discontinued the Model G (fully open) when starting the Model K (small cuddy) model? It seems that the Model Gs listed in the registry are from '75 to '77, whereas the Model Ks that are listed go from '79 to '86. No conclusive overlaps that I could find, but there are some missing data points too.

FWIW, Rumor has it that the model G was built for a sail training program at a NorthEast college, but the deal fell through and the finished boats were put on the market.
Don't know how true it is, but one fact is clear, the model G is a very rare CD indeed.

Good info on the additional Daysailers. It is appreciated. I have edited the initial post to include the provided details.

Mike - The story that a Daysailer was designed for training at a college agrees with something noted on a open model that is currently on the market. I was unsure if that was the design called open or Model G or if there was yet another slightly different design out there. I am thinking that the Model G was the design made for the college and that these are the handful remaining out there. So cool.

After looking at your revised roster on the Daysailer model, I'm trying to get a grasp of the total number of these boats built. I did not realize that there are duplicate numbers in both models........I thought they built a combined total of 141 boats. If reading the roster correctly, I see that the latest number on model "G" (totally open cockpit) is #112 AND that the model "K" (small cuddy) is #141. So are there really about 250 of these boats out there??

I suspect that the 141 count that we see on the webpage comes from the highest hull number listed in the registry for a Model K. I do not know if it is conclusively known that this was the last one made, though, so the Model K count could be higher that 141, in theory.

Regarding the TOTAL total, I agree that the total of both is higher because of the duplicate hull numbers. In total it appears to be no lower than 141 Model Ks + 62 Model Gs (not 112), for a total of 203... or more.

I hope to catch up with Harry at the Nationals to see if he knows whether his G was the last one built and in what year. That could help define if they stopped making one model before starting the other. I also would like to hear from Bob Fleck on the year/Hull # of his "G" as well as Shelby Shearer's hull #.

Hi Matt,

Now I feel guilty--I guess that I did not put the day sailer I had (now owned by Bob Fleck) in the registry. If my memory serves me right, the boat was a 1976 with hull number in the low 50's, maybe 51???.

I looked in the registry, and maybe I missed it, but I know that I put my CD22 in there and all I see on her is her owner a couple owners before me. So, I am not sure whether I put the Ty in the registery or not.

I only saw my CD25D and CD10, both of which I still own. Admittedly, I only put the CD10 in the registry at your urging, and I am glad I did.

No worries, Fran It may be that you did enter it but the registry has been known to delete entries if a user puts in multiple entries with the same name and then tries to edit one. I lost the entry for my first Weekender because of that. It is apparently important to use slightly different user names for each entry.

Hi Matt,

Am vacationing on Cape Cod (Yarmouth). What do you know, right across the street from our hotel--a used boat parts store, complete with some boats for sale including--you guessed it-- A Cape Dory G model open cockpit. It is hull number 31 year 1975.

I have no connection to this boat. I took photos of cockpit but was unable to see. I stood on the trailer held the camera up. That said, the boat is for sale. I am not sure how much but I think between 1500 and 2000. Boat appears to be in pretty good shape-tandem trailer would require close inspection before transport. Anyway, another one to add to the list. He also had a Crosby cat for $1500. If only I had the time, energy and ability to carry them home! Oh, yes and money too.
