Size Does Matter! ?! (CD27)

Post by Greg Bryon »

With regard to the CD27, i need to know the length of all the berths. I am interested in purchasing one but need to make sure the berths are long enough to be comfortable. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I am 6'4" tall and I cannot fit in any berth (as intended) without touching the ends unless I scrunch a bit. I would estimate the settee berths to be about 6'2" and the v-berth to be about 6' fore-aft. My best spot for sleeping is the v-berth all the way against the hull. In this diagonal direction I can stretch out all the way with about 2" extra in the corner of the v-berth (above my head). Luckily my wife is only 5'6" so I can hog her side of the berth at the foot end. I find this diagonal method quite comfortable (the wooden ceiling strips are most reassuring near my nose).

Hope this was helpful.

If the CD27 berths are a bit short, consider the 25D. I'm 6'4 and am comfortable on the starboard setee. Of course, the 25D has no V-berth, as it uses the bow for the head; that's where the extra berth length comes from, despite its' shorter length.

I am 6'3" and need a longer berth to sleep well. On Rhiannon it was not all that difficult to cut out the lower part of the starboard bulkhead to make the berth nearly seven feet long. This put the "foot" end into the hanging locker. A new cushion was needed but the berth was plenty long. While planning this modification I realized the berth could be made wider as well by cutting out the lower part of the locker side. Then I realized that both sides could be done this way. Ultimately that's what I did and this one modification transformed the boat's interior with no sacrifices anywhere except for giving up some hanging locker space and having to make two new cushions. There's a bit more to this modification -- some minor fiberglass work and adding ash ceiling strips below the shelves -- but it certainly is a worthwhile improvement that made Rhiannon's cabin much more open and liveable.

Something to consider. I hope to have some pictures to post in the near future and this will be one of them.

):) I'm a bit shorter than Paul (6'2") but ever so slightly diagonal on the vee berth works just GREAT. Of course having a wife 5'0" does help in this respect :)
Sometimes we use the veeberth filler piece/cushion, sometimes not....

I recently spurned my CD27 for a non-CD, but I loved her dearly and miss many of her finer features. I'll echo Paul's comment: I could only sleep comfortably along the hull in the v-berth. But sleeping wasn't my real size issue with Pegasus. The biggest size problem was headroom in the main salon, particularly the "beautiful" wood trim around the companionway hatch. Even after 8 years, I still managed to rap my head soundly at least once every few days. I'm not sure why CD reduced the effective headroom in the 27 cabin by the 2-3 inches taken by that trim. But it's a great boat; sleep curled up, wear a helmet, and enjoy it!
