1969 Typhoon Weekender

Post by Rick Mulhern »

Looking to buy a Typhoon Weekender and have become aware of a 1969 model with trailer and 3 horse O/B for sale for $4,200. Would appreciate any comments on that year's model (I understand it pre-dates self-bailing) and what a fair price should be for one in good condition. Thanks.

I have owned a '74 Typhoon for the last seven years, and to this day it
remains my most prized posession. I paid $2,500.00 for mine--after
talking the owner down about a thou. It came without a trailer,
but was equipped with an aging 4 horse evinrude.
The sails were original and so were pretty ragged From a cosmetic
standpoint, the boat was pretty well neglected. In the years since,
we purchased a new "Rocket" trailer(3,400 bucks)and installed new
sails with a roller furling system(1.200).
My gut feeling is that 4,200 is a fair price, but not a great
price. I would mumble something about the lack of a bailing system
and offer the guy a stack of hundreds(not the new style) amounting to
somewhere in the neighborhood of 3,200. Also, one more bargaining
chip: if your planning on doing any blue water sailing or lengthy
cruising, you will find the 3 hp engine to be inadequate. The Typhoon
is about a heavy a 19 footer as you will find, and in rough seas you
will be spinning your wheels with anything less than a 6 hp.

Best wishes

Rick: I bought mine, a 77 Typhoon, a few years back from a broker in Portland, OR. They were asking $5,900 and I got it for $4,900. It was in good shape with fair sails. It had stern & bow pulpits, satety stantions and lines, new rigging, windex, fair cousions in and out,a new Mariner 5hp with tank, all the safety equipment, ground tackle, mooring lines, and 6 fenders. It came with an EZloader trailer equipted with an extention tongue. The only thing missing was the owner's manual. On the way home, I stopped in a shopping center, was approched by an ex Typhoon owner, he mailed me a copy of the manual a week later.

Good luck...
