Securing the rudder to the stern - CD10

Post by rchiare1 »

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the rudder and tiller on a CD10, are secured in suct a way that they will not simply fall out of the mounting brackets (gudgens ?) if the boat turns over.
My rudder simply slips into 2 brackets and only gravety holds it in place.
Is there a piece of locking hardware that might be missing from my boat ?

Usually there is a springy metal tab that pops in place after the pintle has been inserted. If you don't have that piece you can probably just use a piece of cord.

Our Fatty Knees dinghy has a small piece of stainless bent in a 90 degree angle, and screwed into the transom above the top gudgeon. You swivel it sideways to put the rudder on, and then back vertically once it is attached. The tab that sticks out keeps the pintles in the gudgeons. We haven't turtled the dinghy to test it, though!

Schaefer make a stainless steel retainer spring for just that purpose; Part# 82-01

I believe I got mine from Hamilton Marine. If not then Waste Marine has them too.

My CD 10 has an angle bracket about 1/2" on each side. It is attached just above the lower gudgeon (I think it would work with either the lower or upper gudgeon). It swivels on the screw that anchors it into the transom. I removed all hardewre to restore the transom and when I put them back I will use a good caulking since there was none installed by the factory that led to decay in the transom. SO - if you install one, countersink the hole so it can hold more caulk, squirt in some varnish to seal the wood then attach with the fastener after caulking. The 90 degree angle bracket just swings out of the way when shipping or unshipping the rudder and the bracket can be made easier or harder to turn by how tight you screw it into the transom! There are a number of ways to do this but that is how my CD10 from 1974 +/- is fitted.

My problem with the angle bracket is if the dinghy is canted over to one side the angle bracket is no longer in the proper position to preclude the rudder from becoming detached.

Not that big a deal

I have this exact same angle bracket whatcha-ma-callit thingy on my Dyer (not a Dhow :( ) sailing dink. For such a simple little bracket, it works great! When I was younger and a little reckless, I'd capsize it regularly, just 'cuz I'd sail on the edge constantly. I don't do that any more, but my kids do now. Two generations of kids in my family have seriously abused this boat. The rudder just doesn't fall off.

By the way, if you ever see me post a sailing dink for sail, don't buy it.

Thanks to all.
I plan on teaching my Grandson to sail this summer and although I expect to get wet, I don't feature the idea of diving for the rudder.

Doesn't it float?

I was under the impression the CD10 had a wooden rudder. Am I wrong?

Not the most elegant solution but I have drilled the end of the pintle so that an S shaped hook can be put through once the rudder is installed. The hook can just be hung on a short piece of string.
