VIs via Bermuda by November

Post by Lou Ostendorff »

This is a notice to any 'experienced' sailors, or those wishing to gain experience blue water sailing from North Carolina to Bermuda, then to the Virgin Islands around the end of October, beginning of November timeframe. I was scheduled to make this run with a friend of mine on his boat, a '91 Jeanneau Sun Oddysey 34 (sorry Cape Dory lovers); however, I don't have 'permission' to go...would any of you entertain the notion of accompanying my friend on this trip? You'd have to fly back from the VIs; he's intending to stay the winter...
Let me know, it could make you a better 'Dory Sailor'!

Hurricane Season??

Post by Warren Kaplan »

Lou,
Isn't the end of October still considered in the Hurricane Season in the Atlantic? I know it would be late in the season but nevertheless still "in season".The waters between the Virgins and Bermuda get a fair share of those storms (should any form). Am I wrong about this?? Just curious...but would any of you "blue water" cruisers out there schedule this particular trip at this particular time of year??

Warren;
Although hurricane season is still present at that time. The probability of a 'hit' is very low. Most people going South from here in New England via Bermuda leave about mid-November. The trick is to balance the end of hurricanes with the transitional gales generated by cooling waters in the North. The watchword is 'weather window, weather window, weather window'. BTW. I have volunteered to help this gent out. Careful planning generally helps promote a sucessful voyage.

IMHO, this is too early to attempt this trip. Hurricane Gordon caught us in mid-November of '94 in the same area. It doesn't take a full-blown hurricane to make this sail dangerous. The sub-hurricane tropical depressions can have much the same result. A lot of these never make the eastern seaboard so they aren't well known. I'd wait until mid-December.

Sound boat, experienced offshore crew, proper sails and equipment important -- I'd make damned sure all were top-notch. You have nowhere to duck on this route once you're past Bermuda.
