Rotting Pedestal - CD 31 Cutter

Post by gwhastings »

I'm loving my recently purchased CD 31. Needing attention very soon is the bottom, flared bracket that secures the wheel pedestal to the deck. It has been seriously eaten away by corrosion to the point where a number of the bolts that held it to the deck are now holding nothing!
Has anyone else had a similar problem? I'd be interested in opinions on whether there is a fix for this that is short of replacing the entire pedestal.

Sometimes Bacons of Annapolis sells used pedestals http://baconsails.com/
or, you can contact Edson and ask them about this:

Well, if it is the original equipment, calling Edson won't do you any good because it is not an Edson. The 31 used Yacht Specialities steering equipment as I just had to replace mine. Yacht Specialities went out of business a while back. I did go with an Edson total steering package, cost was around 2k plus labor to put it in. You can pm me if you want more information. Randy

If everything else is good and the part is not available you might consider having one made at a machine or metal fabrication shop. It would be much cheaper and less trouble than replacing the entire system, Steve.

Edson did not manufacturer the pedestal that Cape Dory installed on the CD31s, they used a pedestal by Merriman, now defunct. So if you need a steering system replacement, it'll probably have to be an Edson system.
