outboard battery connection

I just purchased a '75 CD 25 with a Mariner 8 hp 2 stroke. I hope my question isn't silly, but
does the engine have to be connected to the battery? I plan on using a solar panel to
recharge the battery and not the engine. The amount of electrical equipment connected to the
battery will be very little.

Do not understand why you would not wish to connect your OB alternator,
it's just about 10' no big deal.
