Solo, Nonstop Sail Around The Americas
As most of us sit at home during this winter season we may be dreaming about the upcoming summer season and the cruises that we will be doing.
However, one man is out there in the Atlantic Ocean tackling an amazing challenge. I would like to call your attention to Matt Rutherford and his attempt to sail solo, nonstop around the Americas in a 27 foot boat. What he has accomplished so far is truely amazing and he is finally on the home stretch. Check out his blog at: http://www.solotheamericas.org
We can all learn something from Matt and his experience. Yes, he is not sailing a Cape Dory but he still deserves credit for what he is attempting and has already accomplished.
Currently Matt is off the coast of Brazil and at a critical turning point in his voyage. Check out his blog to see why. If you feel so inclined perhaps you might help with his urgently needed resupply of essential gear!! We feel that this is one man who deserves a helping hand. He has been on the go for over 253 days.
If nothing else his blog makes for some fascinating reading.
As we sit in the comfort of our homes we can only have dreams of accomplishing a fraction of what Matt has done.
By the way --- we are stumping for this fellow sailor, yet we do not know him personally, nor do we have any connection to "Crab" effort.
Enjoy and hopefully we will see you out there this summer or fall.

Remarkable
This man is amazing. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I can't help thinking that this voyage simply was not possible until recently.
Franklin is turning in his grave right now. Not to diminish his accomplishment in any way, which is completely remarkable, it is however a sad state of our planet that a single-handed sailor can transit the East-West Passage when so many died in the attempt not so long ago.

Re: Remarkable
Different weather is definitely a factor. So many other things have also, drastically, changed in a very short time. Clothing, food, water makers, electronics, knowledge of the route, communication, and certainly the boat itself.Carl Thunberg wrote:This man is amazing. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. None of these factors in any way diminish the accomplishments of this man. Truly an amazing journey, Steve.

Doing it in a plastic boat is what impresses me the most!

Yep, with lots of luck hopefully a Cape Dory will eventually punch throught the NW Passage. Actually, it sounds like the seas around Alaska would be the most difficult part.
Sail on,
Sail on,

Albin Vega. Had one for several years. Well made boat. We loved ours. My wife still misses it.

A pretty good Washington Post article on the fellow's arrival in Annapolis. The pictures are terrific. Check out the crap on his hull--how does that happen in 10 months?

Frankly, I think he should have had a Cape Dory 27 for this trip.

Read the same Washington Post article, and of course it had me dreaming. Of course the CD 27 could have mde the trip but I have a lot more miles on me than on the boat!
