Have any of you ever anchored in Dead Horse Bay or Bannister Bay? Dead Horse Bay is located just beyond the entrance to Rockaway Inlet, NY. And Bannister Bay is located in Lawrence, NY inside East Rockaway Inlet (you go under the bridge and hang a left).
Please let me know what your impressions were of those anchorages. And how about the marinas? Anything you know about them would be appreciated too. There doesn't seem to be much information on these areas in the cruising guides.
Thanks,

My daughter got married at Lawrence Country Club last year which is right on Bannister Bay. I live not far from there. They have some marinas but I confess I didn't pay too much attention to it at the time. E mail me what this is all about and I'll be glad to go over there and check the place out. Coming in East Rockaway inlet there is a bascule bridge with 30 ft vertical clearance in the center. Straight channel to the left after bridge with 10-12 ft depth up to a small island then around the island into a narrow channel then it opens into Bannister Bay which is sort of a Cul-de -Sac. Made for a pretty backdrop for a wedding.

Re: Dead Horse Bay or Bannister Bay
My understanding of the channel leading into the marina within the bay is that it has shoaled to 5 or 5 1/2 feet. The marina itself is run by the Town of Lawrence and is for the use of residents of Lawrence. There are no public slips, moorings, fuel dock, supplies, etc. However, as the marina is located within Bannister Bay, you may, of course, drop your anchor there. The Bay itself is small, deep, and quite nice, bordering on the 17th and 18th holes of the Lawrence Golf Club. An alternative stop might be Horseshoe Cove on the New Jersey side of Ambrose Channel.Catherine Monaghan wrote: Have any of you ever anchored in Dead Horse Bay or Bannister Bay?

I'd suggest an alternative to Dead Horse Bay's marina, which has nothing wrong with it, but which is isolated; Sheepshead Bay. Sheepshead Bay has two yacht clubs, Miramar Y.C. and Sheepshead Bay Y.C., both of which welcome transients. Meither has guest slips per se, but Miramar has members' slips which would accommodate a boat of your size. Both clubs have moorings generally available and have tender service. It's also possible to anchor near the western end of the bay. The advantages over Dead Horse Bay is the accessability. Sheepshead Bay has, within walking distance of the clubs, a tremendous variety of restaurants, and even more within a short taxi ride, as well as plenty of options for shopping. Access to New York City (Manhattan) is by subway (Sheepshead Bay Station, a short walk) or by express bus (Command Bus Lines, bus stop even closer.)
Both yacht clubs have web sites; Miramar's is miramaryc.com, I can't remember Sheepshead Bay's URL, but I'm sure a search engine would find it.
