Northeast Fleet has a new Captain!
With overwhelming support at this afternoon's Winter Meeting, the Northeast Fleet has elected Joe Myerson as its new Fleet Captain. (He now has an official 4-stripe Captain's burgee to prove it.)
I know that I'm a hard act to follow, but I suspect that Joe will do just fine.
Thanks to all of you for your support over the past two years!

Congratulations Joe A very much deserved selection.
I still remember with fondness my meeting with you and Neil in Boston a couple of years ago when I was still looking for my Cape Dory 25D. Your kindness then was much appreciated. I am sure you will do an excellent job as NE Fleet Captain.

Thanks and congrats
Yes Neil, echoing Melissa, thanks for all of your loving attention to our beloved fleet. Joe, those are some pretty exceptional characters behind you that have done so much for the NEF. But you quite obviously fit right in. Congratulations! No offense to our past fleet captain but it's exciting to think that one of the future Masthead NE reports might be up for a pulitzer prize. Thanks Neil! Congrats Joe!
Much to our dismay, Tom and I have been unable to attend the last few winter meetings.
To Neil--thanks for the great job for the last two years. And congratulations to Joe--a mighty fine choice to follow in Neil's wake. Looking forward to the 2012 sailing season and NE fleet events!

Thanks, everybody, for your kind words. Fleet Captain, in the Northeast Fleet, anyway, is one of those volunteer jobs where you get back way more than you give.
As I said at the Winter Meeting, special thanks to Joe Myerson, Joe Montana and Dick Barthel for helping me in their capacity as Fleet officers. Thanks also to those who went out of their way to organize a rendezvous, float in, lunch or whatever and thanks to those who went out of their way to show up. It all counts and it adds up to a great experience. (Plus, it makes the Fleet Captain look good.)

Thanks, everybody, for the vote of confidence
Thank you, everybody in the Northeast Fleet, for your vote of confidence. I hope I can live up to the high standards set by that distinguished line of predecessors.
I'll be needing help planning and organizing rendezvous and float-ins, and I might need to find some berths for myself on the Maine Cruise.
As you notice from the photos posted in this thread, the fleet captain does NOT have an official cat-o-nine-tails. He has to rely on friendly persuasion and cooperation from fleet members.
Here's to a wonderful 2012 sailing season!
Best to all,
