We recently bought 8 screens for our 28 from John. We couldn't be more pleased with the quality. When installing one I did not follow John's explicit and easily understandable directions to not use anything except your fingers to place the screens in the ports. I was using a tapered plug to press the screen in and the plug slipped, causing a hole in the screen. We wrote John and asked hm to make another and sent him payment for the screen. He would not accept payment and told us to send him the damaged screen. He replaced the screen without charge (he did tell me not to do it again). John runs a great business and his service is second to none. Buy your screens from him.

Have you ever made screens for any New Found Metals ports? I replaced the stock plastic ports with NFM's bronze ports a few years back. I love the ports but I'm not crazy about their method for using screens. The screens install on the inside of the port with a rubber gasket that needs to be worked around the edge of the port. It takes someone on the inside and someone on the outside with a butter knife working the gasket around. Because the port closes over the gasket the port opening is adjusted differently depending on whether a screen is being used or not. Some type of pressure fit screen either on the inside or out would be a lot easier to use. Did I make sense?

Thanks for your suggestion about making screens for New Found Metals ports.

At this time, I try and stay away from currently manufactured ports mainly because they still offer adequate replacement screens. I gravitate towards the out of production ports of which there is quite a few of. Or, as in the case of Spartan, I try to make a better product then they offer.

The installation method that you described does sound arduous. I think with all the ports that I have run across, most manufactures did not put a high priority on designing quality screens to go with their ports. Humbly, that's where I come in.

If you want, send me photos of the ports from the outside and inside with the screens installed and not. Also dimensions. I'll take a look and see what I can do.

Here is link to their website and how the ports are adjusted to accepts their screens. I'm in Phillly and the boat is in Maine and I don't have any good pictures. Their screens are great quality. It's just the design that I have an issue with.

I recently purchased six (6) of John's portlight screens for my new-to-me Cape Dory 25D and installed them today.

The quality and fit of these screens is amazing. I have life support diving gear that does not fit as well as these screens.

S/V Bali Ha'i really enjoys the look as well. Departing on the club launch I looked back and saw the screens. They really make a difference in appearance.

P.S. As an added bonus, John wraps the screens in the local newspaper. After installing the screens I had a chance to read some of the local Minneapolis/St. Paul news. Weather there this winter is going to be just a little too cold for these bones.

I normally ship US POST Priority. But sometimes, I ship FED X ground.
The packing newspaper is usually about a week old!
