I have just taken delivery of a 1979 28 CD sail #238 which has been laid up for 2 plus years. I am having difficulty with the Data Marine Knot meter, it is reading 2.2 - 2.3 feet (I am in at least 13 feet). I have tried adjusting the shallow gain as directed in the manual and there is little or no effect unless I turn it all the way clockwise and then I get a reading of 149 feet or 79 feet - still way off. I know the transducer was not painted over since I did the bottom myself. I have also used a meter to check voltage and continuity and it seems fine. I also need parts for the wind indicator and can not locate the company or a web site. They used to be located in Pocasset Ma.. Any help is appreciated.

I had the same problem and replaced the meter with a Standard Horizon model. The original transducer has continued to work just fine.

What's the bottom like? If it's soft mud, you may not get accurate readings anyway. The depthsounder works best with a hard bottom.

I've had problems with my Datamarine depth meter being humidity sensitive. If you're handy .... take it apart and brush the printed wiring boards with alcohol (not the drinking kind!). They''ll dry quickly and maybe that will sove the problem. Datamarine is still alive somewhere in the mid-west; I spoke to them recently. If you want the number, I'll do some research.

Could be that the unit is trying to read 12 feet and the display is bad or has bad connections to it. My display went bad and the replacement display was a reasonable price. You can install them yourself. The display just unplugs. Try removing it and re-installing it to improve the connections.

Strangely enough, my Data Marine depth gauge has a behavior mode very similar to David's. This season after launch, I noticed that in reasonably shallow water, it gives correct readings. But anything over 50' (I never see anything over 50) it displays 2.3 to 2.7. I suspect the control unit because of the accuracy of the shallow depths and the exactness of the cutoff depth. I'll follow John Sill's advice first and share what happens (open the unit up and clean any contacts, etc.).

I did call Data Marine and talked to a tech person, who had no idea and suggested that I could send it in for repair.

Update - I ended up taking the instrument to a local Marine Electronics sales/repair store and had it tested ($35.00) I was told it bench tested fine and that the problem was likely the transducer which had a replacement cost of about $150.00. Of Course I would have to have her hauled to change it and I really don't want to do that right now.
I have also experienced a problem with the knot meter which is not responding for speed but seems to report some distance data. But doesn't reset without shutting the instument down. I have pulled out the transducer, removed and cleaned the "wheel" and checked all of the connections and cleaned them. Still nothing. There is a coupling between the transducer and the instrument which I have also cleaned. I assume the original cable was not long enough and the extension was needed to reach the bulkhead.
I also checked the price for the mast head unit (which has been missing for years) for the wind indicator and was quoted $432.96 and another $
