Thanks to all who have suggested things so far. The radio noise is fixed. Only $232.31 for a new radio. Something must have failed in the old one. So that problem is over. But the tach is still out of action. I found the two leads on the engine behind the alternator. Both in place and looking like they've been there for a long time. Alternator is working fine, charging at 14V. So if anyone has additional thoughts I'm listening. Worse case scenario, I take it on the cruise to Rondi setting the throttle by sound. I can do that if I have to. Thanks again for your thoughts. BTW, the engine is a Volvo MD7B two cylinder.

Grab a voltmeter, and take a look at those terminals on the alternator Jerry. Use an AC scale, and see what you have showing. Then, go to the meter and check on it's back if the signal has been interrupted somewhere in between the alt. and the meter. THe wiring harness goes down into the starboard lazarette's forward bulkhead on my boat, where they installed a small terminal strip that holds perhaps 10 wires for the panel. Check and see if there isn't an open in the pathway...or even a short.

You might need a new tach sensor. Costs about $115.00 dollars-but-before spending the bucks, try taking it out and cleaning the head of the unit. Might work!!
