cape dory 27 design question?

Post by john tsampas »

I recently purchased a cape dory 27 hull #48. As i am new to sailing and this is my first sail boat I am learning alot, and the boat is very forgiving. Can somebody tell me what the opening in the bulkhead under the sink is intended for. There is a wire basket type thing on the other side in the engine compartment.

My boat has a yanmar YSB8 one banger! The engine runs great but seems
a little underpowered. I was wondering if a three blade prop will help. Not only in accelleration but in top end speed.

The opening under the sink is for a drawer. It pulls out and I keep my flatware in there. Also, a 3 bladed prop will dramatically improve engine performance.

Look at the "yanmar 1GM" thread about not overproping the boat (1Gm in a CD25).

There must be different designs as my boat does not have a draw, it just has an opening. I think it might be a garbage can holder.

Do you have personal experiance with a three bladed prop.

I have the newest Cape Dory 27 (hull #277 --the last one made,1985)
The opening under the sink on mine is just a way to get to the engine and sink seacocks. If that little door wasn't there you would have a heck of a time getting to the seacocks.

Hi John- I have hull number 47! The YSB8 IS a bit underpowered, but ultra-reliable. We haven't found it a disadvantage yet, though I wouldn't want to motor up New York's East river against the current!
