BHIR 2011 Registration Open; Race Saturday Oct 1, 2011
The Boston Harbor Island Regatta (BHIR) is now taking registrations on line. This year's BHIR will be on Saturday October 1, 2011. This is a great charity race, with proceeds going to clean-up and improving access to the Boston Harbor Islands.
They moved the awards party back to George's Island (where it belongs) immediately after the race. You can buy lunch tickets, T shirts, and hats on their website as you register.
I just signed Tantalus up as a family boat in the non spinnaker class. Hope to see you there!

It's a great race and a great course looping around the Boston Harbor Islands.
Remember that any three of the same will be designated a class with an impressive trophy to the first place finisher. There's also the Northeast Fleet trophy for the first Cape Dory to finish.

The Regatta is October 1st
Just a reminder to get your registrations in for the Boston Harbor Island Regatta. It's always been a good race, even for non-racers. Let's again overwhelm the field with lots of Cape Dorys.
Get three or more boats in your size class and the Regatta organizers will designate a class and dig out a fancy crystal bowl for the first finisher. There's also a trophy for the first Cape Dory overall.
Work on getting your boat there and recruiting other class members!

Get those registrations in
I've been in touch with Regatta officials and expect they'll be promoting the CDSOA Northeast Fleet Trophy, awarded to the first Cape Dory to finish.
In addition, there's a One Design trophy whenever 3 or more boats race in a class; we've had the 28s designated as a class for most or all of the Regatta's history.
Get those registrations in. If you race, the Regatta offers a great course and good competition. If you don't ordinarily race, the Regatta is a good place to start, with a great Boston Harbor Island course and lots of pretty boats to look at.

Nonsly not making it this year but I would like to crew too
I had Nonsly pulled for TS Irene and I don't see myself getting her relaunched this season. I would love to crew for somebody else though.

registered but cannot race
I registered, then found I have 2 work commitments Oct 1 (sat!). I emailed the Island Alliance to keep my reg as a donation, but if they don't or can't do that and the reg is transferrable(?), is there someone who would use it? Send me a PM.

Re: Meet Up?
I have crew coming and going and can't overnight at Peddocks for this one. It's a great anchorage though and convenient to the starting line.jbenagh wrote:Depending on the weather, we will be at Peddick's either Fri or Sat night and might be convinced to stay for both. Last year was a lot of fun. Anyone else interested?

Scratch list for Boston Harbor Islands Regatta - Saturday
The BHIR Scratch List for Saturday has now been published.
Since our CD25 did not get into the water this season we will be in our Capri 22 "Ophelia" which will be in the lead for at least the first minute since we are slated to start right at 10:00. But we will be followed a minute later by "Liquidity" and "Tantalus" (both CD28). At 10:03 "Christine C" (CD30 cutter) is scheduled to start.
Looking forward to saying "hi" to all during the event. We tend drift toward the end of the crowd, but we look at it as a way to see more of the boats and have time to wave! Remember it is all for fun...
Another great excuse to be on the water for the day.

Fri Night
We'll also be at Portuguese Cove but probably will arrive around 7:30pm. I think we will not bring the dinghy but feel free to stop by if you see our lights on. As I recall, we've always been in a hurry in the morning.

Velocity Made Good?
It's not easy when the current is two knots this way, the wind is light and from that way and the first leg is a long, long beat to windward.
We were poised for a good start, just yards from the line and ready to cross at 1001. But adjusting for current, we were tacking through about 180 degrees and that last bit to the starting line took about an hour. Three hours after that, we were a solid mile and a half (i.e., a third of the windward leg) into the race course.
With the prospect of the race closing before we got to the first mark (which now due to fog we couldn't see) we decided to withdraw.
It was a good day on the water anyway and thanks to Carl, Joe and Stan for helping make it so.
See you out there next year.
