CD25 bilge cracks ,leaking into hull

Post by Ronald Klosterman »

I just recently purchased a CD25 1973 hull #65. I've repaired some delamination on an area close to the rudder . Thought I had it repaired, and painted, but now water is coming out of the rudder trunion bearing. I checked the bilge and have found several cracks.(very wet cracks). Apparently the water from the bilge is seeping thru the hull out the bottom. If any one has any ideas, I need help.

Thank you in advance

This problem seems to be not uncommon. My CD25 is hull #93, which I bought this past March, and it too had a weeping keel (although not apparently as far aft as yours). Moreover, a search of this bulletin board will reveal others who have complained of the same malady.

As to the "fix", for this season I had the yard from which I bought my CD drill a hole in the weeping area to drain the cavity inside the keel into which the bilge water had seeped and then had the area ground out and patched. Ultimately, however, I intend on putting in a garboard plug, accessing the cavity, which will permit such errant seepage to drain and the cavity to dry during winter storage. Such plugs are more common on wooden hulls but they also show up on fiberglass hulls on which the keel is integral (as opposed to being bolted on).

Since the previous owner of my boat reports that the boat weeped throught his three years of ownership without any other problems, this is not one of those items that need to be attended to right away or you'll sink. Nonetheless, as shown by the fact that yours ultimately suffered some delamination, it is something that must be corrected.

Best of luck.

First off, let me say that I own a CD30, not a 25, so this opinion is based on general experience that may or may not be applicable..you decide.

That said; *Any* leak into the boat is something to be concerned about and repaired before you go out and use the boat. You guys noted some delam in one boat, and I contend that both boats will show delam in short order if this problem is not stopped as soon as you can. Anytime you immerse an edge of lamination in water, it will wick up the water if it can, this is almost a certainty. All it needs is an unsealed edge, which a crack will most certainly be.

I wonder why this is a common problem with the 25's..or maybe it is common only in freezing states..in which case, the cause would be obvious. Were these boats kept in a state that froze in the winter? I wonder if the bilge was drained of water and then antifreezed (antifrozen??)for winter storage.

My advice is to try and prevent water intrusion as best as you can now..and haul her in the fall for a complete repair. Delaying the repair may be a very expensive mistake.

Good Luck!
