Hello all, My name is Jim and I've been a member of this forum for about two years but have preferred to follow President Lincolns advise and remain silent rather than be thought a fool. But now at last, I think I may have something to offer. My CD28 "Sea Otter" is my first not-a-dinghy sailboat. Though I have a lot to learn, especially about diesels. It didn't take me long to realize that being able to look at my engine was not going to be enough. I would need to be able to get my hands on it as well. So my first task was to improve engine access. This required relocating the galley sink which was located above the engine and modifying the counter above the engine so that it could be removable. I'm afraid I don't have any before pictures but here at least are some after pics. Perhaps this modification will be valuable to others that don't have four foot long triple jointed arms.
That's great, I did essentially the same thing,(didn't have to move the sink though) on my cd30. Much improved access to the engine from above, nice job.

Thanks for the encouragement. This is a great site for ideas and I have learned a great deal here. Sea Otter has been hauled out at my shop for about a year while I gave her a make over. I am most comfortable working with wood so that's where I began. I modified her interior to suit one full time live aboard occupant. Along with improving access to the engine and moving the sink I increased the insulation around the icebox (5" of foam) and replaced the galley counters. Then I built new galley storage cabinets and a new electrical panel. I removed the propane stove in favor of a single burner Origo alcohol stove which I'm very happy with. Here are some pictures of the new galley.
Inspirational! I'll have some pictures in Summer of my CD28 projects. Somewhere earlier in "project photos" are some shots of my replaced portlights. More to come!

Jim,
I really admired your innovative improved engine access for your CD 28. I have been contemplating the same project for years for mine. I assume you just plumbed the sink to the same seacock, located aft of the raw water intake on the starboard side of the engine. It looks like you also modified the counter and storage area around the new sink location to port. It appears you use a single burner Origo stove that you can place anywhere, right?
Does your new top step above the engine lock in place?

Actually Kevin, I cut away part of the shelf below the galley sink and installed a new seacock there. I used the old seacock to supply a pump that provides a deck wash and cockpit shower. The steps didn't need much modification. They drop in place as before. The counter is held in place by a lip aft and two barrel bolts forward which are only necessary when things get bouncy.
That is an Origo Alcohol stove which has worked quite well for my rather simple cooking needs.
I could try and post pictures of the area under the galley sink if you like.
This thread goes back to early 2011 but I just found it. I would love to gain better access to the engine on my CD28 but since it was built in 1977 (Hull # 144) my configuration is different from later models.
To get at my engine it seems the only way is to install a large Beckman plate on the cockpit floor just aft of the companionway. For those who know the layout of my boat, the engine is located mostly under the cockpit so there is no material to cut away in the cabin.
If anyone who has a boat like mine has gained better access to the engine please contact me or reply via discussion.

I will take a photo of my engine but I can tell you both now there is no way I can cut away any material to get at the front of my Yanmar engine. In a 144 the 2 step ladder is a one piece structure that lifts up to be removed after removing the top step that is adjacent to the bridge. One would have to cut into the bridge to gain access to the engine and this of course is not an option. A deck plate in the cockpit deck is the only way and I question how much work can be done from this location to work on the engine.
What no boats do you two have?
