CD28 Cutlass bearing set screws?

Post by tradewinds780 »

I am trying to change the cutlass bearing on my CD28 and have read that there should be set screws holding it a couple of inches from the end and that there may be a wire leading to them visible under the gelcoat.

I ground out a bunch of filler, gelcoat and glass and don't see any sign of set screws. Is it possible that there are none?

I have read all the posts I could find on the subject but any other suggestions are welcome.

set screws

Hi PK, My CD30 Anne Freeman did not have them. When I replaced cutlass bearing I epoxied some 316 stainless T-nuts and threaded set screws into that. Held up for years despite heavy use.

That's a good idea that I hadn't thought of. Thanks.

Some don't have them, and some had them added by owners along the way.

You can see the set screws on my 1979 CD28 in the picture.

Sailing involves the courage to cherish adventure and the wisdom to fear danger. Knowing where one ends, and the other begins, makes all the difference.
