Reid, good report
Thanks for the Pecan Grove Marina report. A bunch of CD's there.
Was that from Grosvenor (CD_30/k Pocket Change)?
I still cannot get eyeball info from Broad Creek. If you hear anything from there please forward. If boats in the anchorage in front of my house are still afloat that's the best news we can get.

Thanks all for reports, hoping for the best -- especially for the Denmark residence, but also for our fleet. Hope everyone in the path of this storm escapes unscathed.
Heading down as soon as things clear. Hoping for some news of Broad Creek soon, looks like we really got clobbered. Ken, I take it you are in Raleigh, thanks for posting if you hear news from Whortonsville.

The Bullet is Dodging Boston
This morning's forecast is sustained winds of (only) 50 knots, as the storm has tracked further west.
Hope all is well further south. We're all anxiously awaiting updates.

Gale Warning for Montreal
Nothing here yet, but even this far North, the forecast is four inches of rain and gusts to 50 or 60 knots around noon.Neil Gordon wrote:This morning's forecast is sustained winds of (only) 50 knots, as the storm has tracked further west.

That was enough to motivate me to get the sails and the boom off, and double-check the mooring lines. We're in shallow water and not well-sheltered, so I hope the unprepared boats will be all right.
As Neil says, I hope things are ok for those more directly affected.

T. S. Irene
I am located in Oswego, NY on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. It is about a six hour drive NW from NYC and about a four drive from New England to the east. It is almost 10:30 AM Sunday morning.
The low impact from Irene is just beginning to be felt. We are being told that we are on the western fringes of the storm. The weather services tell us to prepare for winds averaging 40 MPH with gusts up to 50 MPH or more with stronger winds nearer to the lake. The impact here pales to reports that we hear from other regions that are in the direct path of Irene.
Already, the wind is picking up from a northward direction. True to form, this is a wrap-around, counter clockwise wind from Irene's low prssure. I drove to the lake to view the large roller waves crashing against the stone breakwater. Not a boat was in sight. Nada, nil, zilch power or sailboats. The Oswego Coast Guard is ready if necessary.
If there is anything here that could go wrong, it would most likely be the fact that the ground is very wet and that, with the wind, could cause falling trees on houses and falling branchs causing local power outages.
I am very concerned about the effects of Irene on our brother and sister sailors. I wish them the best, no personal injury or any damage to their boats.
I remain (knocking on wood)

Report from Boston
The wind and rain are just beginning to pick up in Boston... wind from the southeast and still below 20 knots. I expect we'll see the worst of it mid-afternoon... but still should be well below damaging wind and or storm surge at the marina.
Fair winds, Neil

News from Oriental
A friend at Point Marina reports surge 20" above the Isabel mark at the end of the street, away from the creek. Parfait met the pier at the stern quarter, but otherwise seem to be OK. I'll be heading down there with another friend in the morning.
Keep on sailing,

I just got back from checking on Calipygian. She came through what turned out to be a pretty mild event, at least in Mill Basin, Brooklyn. I wasn't able to have her hauled because of engine problems and the number of boats waiting in line, so I ran eight lines with chafe guards, put out six fenders, stripped the sails and removed the boom. The genoa was easy thanks to the tip about running one of the sheets through the in-board fair lead and around a wench. The storm surge left debris around the boat yard, but did not get high enough to float anybody off the stands. I feel fortunate to have escaped intact. Hope others do as well.

Isabelle + 20 inches
Ken,
If this is true then there is 16" of water over my finished floor. This may impact plans for next weekend.
Perhaps anchored boats are okay. No word on anything but I'll be home for sure tomorrow and can see for myself.
Stay in touch.
Lots of concern about our friends in the Chesapeake and further north.

Edgewater, MD
We did well in Edgewater. Tropical force wind but no surge. The offshore track here blew the water out of the Upper Bay and seems to have spared at least the Northern Bay.
Lots of trees down and probably no electricity until mid week or later.
Land line commo down in many places also. I'm using PDA Net for a modem.
Good luck everybody.

Surge
Andy,
The report comes from another boat at Point Marina who was able to compare the water level with the nail on the telephone pole from Isabel. He apparently holed up in Bayboro and had to take to the fields to get around down wires and trees. I am thinking about driving the Jeep and bringing a towing strap. We will be leaving around 9 from roughly 64 and the beltline if you want company.
I am quite sad that your beautiful house might have water on the floors.

Hudson River Storm Surge
We fared pretty well up the Hudson. We got lots of rain and had a couple of feet of surge. Here is our club in Ossining just after high tide (11 am today) with the storm surge. Comparing the two pix, you can see the travelift rails are completely submerged in the top picture.
Here is the same club three hours later. Winds blowing around 25+.
Hope everyone is OK.

Ken --
I am also headed down from Dunn, NC in the morning. I'll have 2-M handheld in car and will monitor 146.55 simplex as most repeaters are down when you get close to Oriental. I'll head down Hwy 70 thru Goldsboro, Kinston, New Bern then 55 to 306 at Grantsboro stoplight to Kershaw Rd. into Oriental. Hwy 55 into Oriental is still blocked (per Hwy Patrol) with trees and power lines down. I'll also monitor 146.55 when in Oriental.
