Intrepid 9 meter

Post by sdcarey »

I am restoring an intrepid 9 meter. Any info on where i can get parts? I need gasket materials for the port holes, a bow and a stern pulpit, a dodger, handrails, eyebrow rails, and a few other things. I would appreciate any help.

You can find edpm rubber gasket from mcmaster carr or manhattan supply, 1/2" round. It was only available in 100' rolls- someone may have extra they would sell you. use the seach function for info as to technique.
Defender used to carry pulpits and stern rails. Check marine consignment in R.I.(near quonset)- they have all kinds of stuff.
There must be a local canvas shop that can give good info on dodgers and stainless. There's a lot of boating in the area of westport - should be plenty of vendors close by where you can spend your boat dollars. Stop by a boatyard/marina and ask questions, google, do some research. have fun, stay with it,(the restoration)- good luck

handrails and eybrows

Post by trapper »

I replaced the handrails and eybrows on my 25D. I found a very good carpenter and he made new ones using the old ones as patterns. The carpenter was not expensive. The teak was very expensive. So my guess is that it is not difficult with the right knowledge and tools but because of the cost of the wook, make sure you get a very experienced carpenter.

Also the bulk gasket probably works great and I am sure are less expensive but I used the ready made gaskets from spartan marine hardware http://spartanmarine.com/ they were vey easy to install.

Spartan supplied many original parts for the boat. I also had a bent cleat that I replaced from Spartan and a seacock handle. I highly recommend them.

Good luck with your project.

Stainless fabricator

I purchased a stern ladder for my Intrepid 9M from Tops-in-Quality in Michigan. Now when I googled them, it goes to this link.

http://www.whitewatermarineinc.com/

I guess they took over and gave the company a more marine-specific name. In any event, they could probably make whatever you need, although a local welder could probably do that as well.

Thank you that is very helpful. Do you still have your I9M? I would love to see some pictures. i am most interested in pictures of the deck. I purchased my boat twenty years ago after she went under a low bridge during hurricane Bob. Everything on the deck was basically ripped off or hopelessly mangled. Children and life have delayed me in my restoration project but I am full out now. I have repaired and painted the deck but I am not sure about where some of the fittings go. Especially on the stern. I have the cleats, dorades and winches in place but there are some pad eyes I am not sure about and I am also concerned about where the feet to the stern pulpit should be placed so the don't interfere with the back stay. My boat has been modified in the past so it has a split backstay. I am also looking for gasket material for the portholes. The portholes are the same as on the other Cape Dory's.Thanks so much. I hope you still have your boat!

I meant to say that the port holes are NOT the same as on other Cape Dory's.

Intrepid 9M

My Intrepid 9M has been hauled for the season(Irene) but you're welcome to visit and climb over her whenever you'd like. Elskerinde is at Cape Cod Shipbuilding in Wareham so it shouldn't be much more than a 35 minute drive.

Oh Yes! I would really like that! There are so many little details on the deck that I need to figure out! Thanks!

port hole gaskets

Post by sdcarey »

I found the stuff I needed. It was call rubber rope gasket. It was 1/2" diameter. After searching websites and calling marine stores I actually found it at an auto glass company called Glaser Glass in New Bedford. It was really cheap! So cheap it was free! The guy had a length of about 12 ft which he just gave to me. He said If i needed more he had it and the cost was minimal. Nice!
