Post by jack Kelley »

How to remove compass from edson pedestal to access gears to lubricate shaft gears and to oil roller chain? Do not see any screws etc. to remove.

Thanks,

Not sure about yours, but on my 31, this job would start by removing very small screws that hold on the chrome trim/base of the compass. I cannot remember: maybe there is a plastic piece that comes off of the compass before that. Then it becomes self-explanatory. The real connection to the pedestal is inside that chrome.

Maybe your chrome part is held on with clips or something. Once you get that off, things will be obvious. I think.

For the most commonly found Ritchie pedestal compass, remove the light unit (two screws). Then you can lift the chrome can off. On the black ring on top of the compass DO NOT remove the screws around the perimeter, they seal the body and dome in place.

You may be able to lube the chain and sprocket at this point. If not the compass is mounted with four screws that you can remove.

Not difficult, but be careful, little things have a habit of falling into hard to get places.

not sure image will come through

Remove the Ritchie nameplate screws and the cover slips off -- may need to disconnect the light screws.
