Spinaker for Typhoon

Post by Jim Cassidy »

I was recently given a Typhoon Weekender and noticed it appears to have been rigged for a spinaker at one time. Does anyone have any information on how it could be re-rigged to fly one? Where to go to buy a used chute?

jim,
the '76 ty i bought used was rigged for a spinnaker but did not come with one. there was a track on the front of the mast with a ring for the spinnaker pole. there is a tang just above the forestay attachment point for a turning block for the spinnaker halyard.
i purchased an assymmetrical spinnaker last year and added the turning block to the tang for the halyard, a turning block at the stemhead attached in the hole behind the hole for the forestay through which is run the downhaul for the tack, and two turning blocks at the aft corners of the lazarette for the sheets (these i saw on a daysailor) which are run to the genoa winches. last year i used the genoa tracks and winches and that worked pretty well also, but the sheeting angle seem a bit acute.
if you were thinking of a symetrical spinnaker you would also need a pole and the jib halyard could act as the pole topping lift.
could not tell you where to find a used spinnaker, but an internet search might turn something up. my assymmetrical cost me total with blocks, sheets, shackles and sail about $425. it should last a good long time and it's a blast from a reach to a run.
