What is the threaded hole (about 4" diameter) on the rear of the cockpit, next to the name plate behind the tiller for? I am a new owner and it looks like something should have screwed into the space but ours is open. A friend suggests it is for pumping out water and should be covered. What covers the hole and where would I get a replacement? ANd what should I do with it in the meantime? Thanks-Marian Feldman

It should have a cover (which is also threaded) which was put there to allow access to the nuts that are under the transom. Try NicroFico as I think they are the ones who made the access port. West Marine may also have it in their catalog as well. I had a Ty for 18 years before getting my 27 and I only opened it up once to check the tightness of the nuts. In the meantime, I would try and cover it with duct tape of something like that.

Re: CD typhoon:cockpit threaded opening behind tiller?
marian,
it is actually a 4" deck plate used in a vertical position. many are installed on boats as inspection portholes or access ports. as bob states you can access the through bolts for the motor mount, cleat, stern light, etc. i don't know that it would serve any purpose as a pumpout port because access to the bilge is not convenient here unless a hole is cut in the inner liner.
i use mine to run the fuel line to my outboard through. the five gallaon fuel tank is under one of the cockpit seat hatches and the fuel line gets pulled out through this port to attach to the outboard when needed.
happy sailing.

Marian,
No rush since water in there doesn't go anywhere bad. I personally would stuff a towel in it till you get a new deck plate. (Duct tape does more harm than good, in my humble opinion). Almost every chandlery plus catalog store shows these for very little money.
