repowering Cape Dory 27

Post by Bert Felton »

Has any one repowered the Cape Dory 27 with a larger engine? The original 8 hp, I believe, seems a little under powered. I am looking for a boat to cruise Alaska. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area where there is a 27.

Thank you,
Bert

The last 27s and the 270s used a Westebeke 13HP engine and probably was a good solution. I had a CD27 with the Yanmar YSM-8 which was marginal with the two-bladed prop, in my estimation. The friend I sold it to replaced the two-bladed prop with a three-bladed unit and I can't believe the difference! They also made a YSM-12 which was about the same physical size as the YSM-8 and I belive a few had these engines before the Westebeke series production run. I have a CD28 now which had a Volvo MD-7 which was replaced by a Yanmar 2GM20F and is great now. I also have the three-bladed prop which helps in reverse too. I think a Yanmar 1GM10 would fit in the 27 and since a YSM-8 was already in there, a Yanmar dealer might have some real exchange knowledge. Yanmar also has a web site with lots of details and they will converse with you too. I am a real Yanmar nut and have found these engines to be unbelieveable and friendly. The parts are available all over and they don't bleed you when it comes to prices. You can buy the engine shop manual (which I recommend) for a lot of details and good information. I bought the one for the YSM-8 and now have the one for the 2GM20. I recommend the fresh water cooling system even in fresh (lake or river) water because you can clean out the heat exchanger if mussels or other boogers decide to grow in there a lot easier than the engine and you can get better heat exchange with the "coolant" than the water directly if you are in hot climes.

Good Luck and talk to boatyards and reputable dealers about what is feasible and prudent. Over powering isn't the best idea and the additional weight hurts sailing performance too. I think she should have had a 12-13HP engine originally, but only Carl Alberg could probably answer the question properly!

Best Regards!

Bert,
My 1984 CD27 has the Westerbeke 13 combined with the 3 blade prop. It has abundant power. I typically chug along @ 2000 RPM making 5 knots or so at slack tide. 6 knots can be had at or around 2500. It's been a great engine. Haven't had so much as a hiccup in 8 years.

Bert:

The prior owner repowered my 27 with a Yanmar 2GM20F. Presumably because it was previously moored on the Shinnecock Canal on Long Island, that develops a 6 knot current and if you miss the marina there are low bridges downstream!!!

With a two blade prop, the engine provides tremendous umph. It also seems to fit fine, although the installer seems to have had to remove a little of the fiberglass behind the companionway ladder to get the engine in.
