I have sustain surface damage (gouges) to the hull of my CD Typhoon over an area of two feet. Can I fix it myself? Yards ask a fortune. Can anyone with experience tell me how?

Get a copy of the West System book, "Fiberglass Boat Repair & Maintenance" published by the Gougeon Bros. It's only about $3.00 at Boat/U.S. or West Marine. It will take you through the repair step by step.

Start small... If you don't feel comfortable doing a LARGE repair to your hull DON'T TRY IT. I expect that color matching will be very difficult. No two whites seem to be the same. I tangled with a dock cleat one time by accidently getting the bow of the boat between the floating dock and end piling....don't even ask how....
Put a 2-1/2 foot,1/4 gash into the front bow, extending from half up the side down to the water line. Laminate was ok, gel coat was not.
Gel coat was very thick in that location. Anyway...gave the job to my wife.....yard wanted something like $2500 in 1986. I was fortunate at the time that we lived relatively close to the CD factory so gel coat was not a problem. Today it is only a modest problem because you would have to buy about a quart of match gel coat for about $77 (you will need to ask latest price). One place is Gel Coat Products Inc. in Seattle Washington (tel 206-781-1162, fax 206-781-3177). You will need to send them some piece of a "sample". I have just bought more gel coat from them (matched to my CD hull and also to my non-skid) which I had matched and they have on record. But I imagine that the whites did change from year to year....
Anyway, my wife opened up the gashes into a broad "V" bevel and then painted (with a very small artist brush and layer by layer the gel back into the "V". Some 12 coats I remember...time consuming...but came out wonderful and cost us about 12 bucks at that time. It requires a bit of careful wet sanding going from about 240 grit up to at least 600 grit for the polished look. The sanding area is kept very small (limited only to the direct work) and much of it is done with a pearl block eraser as the sanding block. Even today, some 12 years later, it looks very good and barely, barely noticeable....
