Mast Stay Pulling the plates through the deck

Post by Bay0Wulf »

Cape Dory Typhoon - The mast is trying to pull the plates(?) thru the deck at the stays starb'd & port ... I've been grinding out the glass and "repairing" it but ... aside from staying out of heavy wind ... how do I stop this from happening? I was thinking of sandwiching them through the deck and cabin overhead by through-bolting heavy plates on both sides ... this seems a little inelegant ... I don't mind I sail to sail not to be a fashion plate but ... is there a better way? Please reply to e-mail also : hdwmavrick@att.net

If you are seeing a crack a few inches inboard of the chainplates, this is a well known problem in the Typhoon weekender. It is not the backing plate pulling through the deck, but the mast pushing down on the cabin top and the side decks. You can solve the problem with a mast compression post, but you also need to see whether the balsa core in your side decks is rotten from water entering the cracks. Search the archives on this site for more details.

Richard.
