How many coats of Cetol?

I am doing the teak this spring and seek advice on the number of coats of Cetol to apply. I have applied 2 coats of Cetol Natural Teak and wonder if another is an example of diminishing returns. I plan to apply 2 coats of the Cetol Gloss as well.

I have used Cetol for at least 10 years and put on two coats of the brown and 4 coats of clear in Florida. Your system should work just fine.

A maintenance coat of clear next year should be all you need.

Hi Frank,

I used 3 coats of the Natural Teak and 2 coats of gloss simply because that was the recommended application from Sikkens.

I don't think it would be overkill. It holds up really well.

The key is to keep the gloss maintained.

putting the second coat of gloss on today. This nearly week-long run of perfect weather over the Chesapeake Bay is well-timed.

I usually varnish, but I'm thinking about the Cetol Natural for the toerails.
I've seen it on one boat and it looked pretty decent.

If you feel like showing off with some photos, I'd be very interested in seeing how it turns out for you.

All,

I will post pictures next week when I have the opportunity to get ack to HHS and....take pictures!

I think it came very nicely and much more natural looking than the old Cetol. Big improvement. Love the gloss too - it makes the finish look wet. I'm relunctant to step on the toerail when climbing aboard :)

It's flexible and therefore imprintable with the soles of footwear. I always felt confident.

Are we talking about stepping on the toe rail to climb aboard or bracing against it while trying to work on the foredeck?

Raven now has extended sail track so I no longer step directly on any bright work when boarding.

As far as bracing, I feel the toe rails on our boats are one of the major "shortcomings" of the design. I don't care how they are finished, there just isn't enough height to gain much security.

Forget about the finish, has anyone figured out a good way to make them higher on the foredeck?

I am just beginning my experience with Cetol gloss. The dinghy is done now but not put back together. It doesn't seem to flow very well and stays soft for a long time.

I am hoping it also holds up long enough to make any complaints fade away, Steve.
