While I've been refinishing the exterior wood on my Typhoon this week I've made a few findings: Used West Marine Woodpro Finish, made by Armada. Paid $10.00 for a quart, use to pay over $30 for a quart of Cetol, isn't competition great. I always leave masking tape on too long. Spent the last two days removing the adhesive, but found a good product, Goof Off, works like 3M Adhesive remover buy is a lot cheaper. I always debate if it's best to remove the masking tape between coats or to leave the tape on for two to seven days while I get on couple of coats of finish. Also It dawned on me, why use 1 1/2" or 2" tape which leaves a wider adhesive mark when it comes off. Next time I'm use 3/4 or 1" and being more careful. Just wondering how other CDers handle the refinish ritual.

Re: Wood Refinish findings
I decided to protect the boat from the sander when I redid the toerail, so I used duct tape. I checked it after a couple of days and it removed easily. When I finished sanding I removed the tape easily from the hull which had wax on it. The tape on the deck was a disaster! I couldn't get the residue off. I tried acetone and it just smeared the glue. I had a flash of inspiration (desperation?) and put some baby powder on the residue. It seemed to dry out the tape glue and I was able to easily remove it with a dull edged tool. Don't want to make that mistake again, but it was a pretty good save. I used the Boat US TeakCoat made by Armada and it sure is looking good. Now we'll see how it lasts.

I also used the Boat US TeakCoat and think it looks like many coats of a good spar varnish. The color and satin finish are a bullseye. I use a cabinetscraper, not one with a handle but the rectangular one used in our furniture shop, to touch up the rubbed areas and then some 220# paper before several coats of finish. The scraper is a little tricky to put an edge on but once there it works like a dream. Hope the Armada withstands the elements.

jim,
3M makes a lacquer resistance tape that lasts quite a few days without marking or leaving adhesive. also leaves a clean edge. i've also used the stretchy blue masking tape but everything seems to get under the edge and makes a messy job even though you can leave it on for a good long time.

I've tried the blue tape, painters tape, duct tape and paper tape But the Texas sun melts it all. I always say I'm going to remove the tape between coats, but I usually run out of time and leave it on until the last coat of finish. Well it's still worth it, it's a labor of love.

Re: Wood Refinish findings
A couple of profesional tips.
When laying tape use a plastic squegee the kind you use for applying body putty to push the tape edge down.
When applying the finish be careful not to overlap the tape. It is only there for mistakes. If you consistantly paint over the tape it will make it much more difficult to remove as the coats are thicker on the edge of the tape causing it to tear.
I use the blue tape and have had no difficulty removing it after 3-5 days which is usually enough time to complete the job.
Good Luck.
