Anchoring with bow sprite roller
Anchoring with bow sprite roller
I have a CD31. When anchoring must the rode go through the bow chock or can it be rigged to go over the bow sprite roller? The problem is the bob stay which rubs on the rode as the boat yaws with the wind . Any thoughts?
anchoring
Hi Christine, There a couple of things you can do. Are you worried about chafing on the bobstay? or noise of the rubbing? Do you have an all chain rode? or is it Chain for a number of feet, and then line. If it is all chain, you can continue to keep it over the roller and attach a chain snubber (with hook) which is line, and put it to one side or the other and snub it off on the cleat after going thru the chock. The snubber takes the load off the chain and keeps if from rolling on the roller after slack is done to tighten up on the line. Another thing you can do is to do a bridle system which puts your pivot point out in front of the bobstay. Thirdly, if you are worried about chafe, I have seen some sailors put a roller such as you do for the shrouds on the bobstay to minimize chafe. Hope that helps, you can pm me and I'll walk thru the bridle system, it's pretty easy and it helps the sailing at anchor.
You should be using a snubber and it really should go through the bow chock, not left with the roller/bowsprit taking the loads. Its okay in mild winds for a short period, but anything else, snubber and bow chock Chafe on the bobstay should not be an issue, it may rub it a bit when swinging in a gust but it shouldnt chafe. Total time I have spent at anchor added up amounts to several years, never once has bobstay chafe been a problem. I have chafed at the chock though and recommend chafe protection there.
