CDs in the tsunami surge in Santa Cruz

Post by d1trout »

Fellow sailors, last Friday my 25D and her slipmate, a CD27, got hit hard by the tsunami surge in the SC harbor. You will find the YouTube videos interesting. Neither boat sustained really serious damage. I lost some toerail and a bunch of gelcoat to dock abrasion, but we are both dry below and floating on our lines. Compared to many others - 20 boats were sunk - we were very fortunate, even though we were in an area of maximum wave impact. Makes me happy to have a boat built like a tank!
The harbor is shut down for the week while the damage is repaired and the sunken boats removed. I actually think that having our two heavy, deep full keel boats next to each other on a single dock may have contributed to the dock being torn off and setting us adrift. I might add that BoatUS, with whom I am insured, called me Sat AM to ask if I had sustained damage and to say that if I had, they were standing by to receive my claim!! I was impressed. We shall see if the resolution of my claim is as expeditious as that initial contact!

Just looking at the video got me completely petrified, nauseated and speechless. I got very sad and it took quite a while for me to get my composure back. What despair to see one's boat in something like that.

Given our weather here in Florida it is for just these reasons that I am on a mooring rather than a dock.
