Re: Manson 44
So is it in your trunk to return for an even BIGGER anchor -- or is the 44' the bigger anchor??? 330 owners wanna know -)
The 44 is the bigger anchor, upgrading from 35 lb CQR.
Just picked it uplast weekend at West Marine, purchased at the Boston Boat Show.

the knockoff question
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the evidence that Manson knocked off the Rocna seems to be this: Manson came out after Rocna, with an anchor similar in all important respects. Also, look at the other anchors that Manson makes. Don't they look just like anchors developed by other people? Please report if you have better information.Russell wrote:
The only word we have that Manson knocked off Rocnas design is via Rocnas very obnoxious online marketing. I take anything Craig Smith says with huge grains of salt, remember his goal is to get you to buy their anchor and Manson is his obvious competitor. Buy what anchor works for you, let the companies and courts worry about that other stuff.
Given reputation, I wouldnt be suprised if suddenly Craig Smith shows up and starts posting in this thread... I hope our board admins would ban him on sight.
Maybe Manson anchors work well. I know that the Rocna has worked better for me than any anchor I've ever had.
Too expensive
I have been wanting to upgrade to a 44-45 lbs anchor for a while and have looked at both the Rocna and the Manson. The shank on the Manson looks a bit flimsy to me compared to my Delta (same size). The Rocna is just too expensive for me, and I just can't seem to be able to justify the extra expense for a Manson versus another Delta. Maybe someone can convince me to change, but the Deltas have served me well over the years.

Re: the knockoff question
Well, a Rocna looks pretty much like a Spade with a roll bar on it, so are you going to say that it's a knockoff, too? Probably is, in a sense, but I don't think it matters nearly as much, compared to fundamentals like honesty, quality and product support.SurryMark wrote:...Manson came out after Rocna, with an anchor similar in all important respects...
Same thing as trying to differentiate a "genuine Bruce" from a Lewmar Claw or a Manson Ray. I'm glad to see that these designs get updated and modified and built in different versions by different people over time, which gives us all more choices.
I think the important thing is sailors have a selection of anchors and techniques to use, to suit conditions, styles and preferences. Trying to find the "one best anchor", and then upsizing that to humungous size, is not my approach. Other people, however, may feel just great that they think they have picked the biggest and best anchor possible.
Different strokes for different folks?

Let's not get caught up in the who copied who muck & mire because the truth is that the Rocna has many similarities to the Bugel/Wasi who claims that Rocna copied their design and the concave fluke was copied from Spade.
Peter Smith the designer of the Rocna once said:
"I developed the Rocna after using a Delta. I had seen early versions of the Spade, and decided the spoon shaped concave fluke was the way to go."
So yes the Rocna is a COPY of the Bugel/Spade and the Manson Supreme is SIMILAR to the Rocna. Chicken/egg stuff. Don't let Craig fool you..
Craig Smith is rude and their anchors are now made in China, which I could care less about as it is still a good anchor, but the fact is they are still raking in the profits as if they were making them in NZ or BC. There are also credible reports that the Chinese Rocna's are made from sub specification steel!!
I love my Rocna but am no longer recommending them because I despise the companies tactics. The Manson is an excellent anchor and I still own one, it has performed IDENTICALLY to my Rocna and both are at 100% with zero failures of any performance measure.

manson
I don't know about how it fits on the roller of the 31 or 33 but I can say that spending the money on a 35lb Manson and an all chain rode for Arianna was one of the best investments we have made before we left on our cruise. We have spent the vast majority of our time on the hook and have and several times had winds over 30 kts and a few gusts to 50+. This anchor and chain has only dragged one time and it was completely my fault. I got too confident and set it on way too short of scope, even then it took a while to see for sure that we did drag a little. This anchor has set the first time every time in all conditions we have met since leaving Mobile Al. Our advice is "don't leave home without it"

Would You Bet Your Life on a Mass Murderer?
There is some evidence that these anchor discussions rarely arrive at firm conclusions (think "guns on boats"). However I'd be inherently suspicious about this Manson idea. Can we really put our trust into a product named after a famous mass murderer?SurryMark wrote: ... the evidence that Manson knocked off the Rocna ...
My advice is to go slowly here. Maybe a member (or associate member) can provide a reference to a sailing magazine article (or even hearsay evidence from a guy down the dock) to settle this definitively. Just remember that old copyright thingie.
Frankly this whole sailing thingie [sic] gets real complicated real fast.

I don't get this
Wouldn't that apply to any anchor?Rocna STRONGLY states that you should not use the hole in the shank with restraining pins or bars as waves hitting the anchor could cause enough movement to bend the pins.
Many thousands of boats have pins thru their anchors. Is this really an issue? This is a new one on me. But then again, this is our first boat that has the anchor stowed on a roller with a pin.
(My pin is already bent, because the whole fitting is bent; but that is another story. Or should I say project.)
