Friends with newer boats trying to steer me away from considering a CD25 on the basis that full keel boats are too slow. I don't plan to race, but need a better handle on how much slower I'm getting into, especially in light winds.
Anyone have rough estimates (or guesses) on how much wind it takes to move a CD25 at 3 kts? 4 kts? 5 kts? How much wind before you feel a need to reef? How fast does the boat move in 4 kts of wind? 8 kts? 12 kts? 15 kts?
thanks.

light, med air handling of CD25

Re: light, med air handling of CD25
I don't believe anyone has developed polars for the CD25. It is NOT a light air boat. IMHO the minimum air would be above 10 knots. The theorheticcal hull speed is about 6 knots. With the basic sail plan, I wouldn't consider sailing in anything less than 10 knots of wind. However, ask your friends to bring their light air boats out when the breeze is kicking upover 15 knots to about 25 knots.. guess what.. your lead sled will do very well. Also consider the sea condition, this boat will do very well in relatively large seas. With the addition of a cruising spinnaker, she will do very well in her down/off wind performance. Hope this helps.

It's all about compromise.
If you're not racing, and just daysailing, fast isn't important. If you're cruising, fast is nice, but heavy can be nice, too, if the conditions deteriorate.
Where are you sailing? What are the conditions usually like? How far from a safe harbor might you find yourself? Any family considerations?

Re: light, med air handling of CD25
Yes, at 4,000 lbs, a CD25 is not a rocket sled. However, with a clean
bottom and good sails, she can surprise a lot of folks! Brigitta did
just that a few weeks ago when we had a 14 nm race in light air on the
Choctawhatchee Bay. The cruiser class was divided into A and B fleets
(with us in B, of course). We wound up finishing third overall and
first on corrected time, for BOTH fleets! So, with a clean bottom,
good sails, good crew and patience, a CD25 is just fine, even in light
air. And if that light air happens to start honking... well, I've
gotten 7.5 knots with main & 110 on a beam reach with 3 foot chop.
We then pulled a double reef, to get more control, and slowed down
to only 6.5 (GPS readings, not knot meter!).
If anything, your friends may be jealous since you can also sail a
CD25 quite easily single-handed.
