25D Restoration

Post by Bruce Ebling »

I estimate about 4 weeks of 40hrs/week of labor plus materials. Worth every penny the "D" is a pocket cruiser worth saving

Restoration

Post by K_LeMans »

Not to criticize what appears to be very nice work, but:

How do you replace the stuffing box packing when there is only 1/2 in. clearance between the packing nut and the shaft coupling?

Having to pull the shaft to change the packing..... not fun.

Can you get both hands through that deck access hatch? Looks dicey having to work underneath the exhaust hose to adjust the stuffing box........ which I have to do more than once when that gore tex packing is new.

Might be better to just bite the bullet and go with the PSS dripless unit.....?

Not that I'm a pro or anything. But I have spent my share of time messing with that darned stuffing box. I have a right to be skeptical....

Good catch kevin. It might be possible to replace the packing in there but is sure isn't going to be easy, even by the usual standards.

I have thought about doing a hatch of some sort in Raven's cockpit sole. In order to be really useful it would have to be as large as possible. The Alum ones are damn ugly and tremendously expensive. It seems like an area where you wouldn't want to skim on integrity so anything less secure would be out.

I had thought about making up a bolt in section with a lip and seal. If you did need to get in there for something major you could unbolt it. If the hatch sat flush it could be covered with a grate. I suppose that is still an option with the one shown.

So far I have just dealt with things by cramming myself into the cockpit locker with the lid tied up, Steve.

Does anyone know where the Little Yacht Services 25d restoration pics are? I found the utube video, but am after the project pics.

I seem to remember they installed an on board reverse cycle AC in the starboard bunk and was interested in the water/electrical connections.

Also, looking for a non skid paint to finish some core repair I did in the cockpit recently. Interlux Sand Beige is too light to match and Kiwi Grip tan? is too yellow looking?

Access to the stuffing box on this installation is a breeze compared to the 22D, where the waterlift muffler is installed on a fiberglass shelf just inches directly above the stuffing box. I literally spent hours trying to loosen the packing nut which was recently disassembled, cleaned and lubricated. Not to mention the many times I had to fish the dropped wrench out of the bilge with a wire hanger.

I still have not obtained the proper adjustment where the new Gore GFO packing actually drips.
