water in bilge

Post by Joe »

my boat is a cd25 1979,takes on water regular pump out the bilge every couple days.checked thru the hull fittings not wet during spring bottom painting did not notice any damage that might cause a leak, when I first launched an motored to my slip the bilge filled to the floor of the cabin since the it has not been so bad any idea what my problem is? I know that when it rains i get water from topside need to do some calking up there.

Joe,
Did you fill your fresh water tank before launching? I noticed after topping my water tank off this season water was leaking from around top area of tank and running into the bildge. The bildge had filled 2-3"and then stopped. I figured it may have a vent near the top and I had overfilled it. Yesterday, after a day out in 'bouncy' conditions, I again noticed about 3" of water in bildge. I checked the water tank and it was about 1/2 full. I plan to check for a leak in upper part of water tank when I get a chance. I never experienced the problem before...even though I had kept the water tank full (primarily because she handles better). I also checked thru-hulls and all throughout the boat, but saw no evidence of wetness or water entry. Good luck.

It would be very easy to determine or at least narrow down the source of the water...Taste it. If it is brine then possibly check your rudder post/stuffing box. If is is not brine then it is either the f/w
tank or rain leakage.

God! If its the holding tank water I would hope that the bilge water flunks the "nose" test way before you get to the taste test!!!

Anytime one is checking liquids, from "inexpensive" scotch to bilge water(admittedly, it is sometime difficult to tell the difference), always use the nose check first. After all, ya wouldn't want to down some bad scotch in front of the crew!!!
