Always better to hear "scope it out" from a submarine captain vs. hearing it from my primary care physician.

A guy sits down at a bar in Chicago and tells the bartender, "give me three shots of scotch."
Bartender says, "all at once?"
"Yeah, just line then up there on the bar."
The customer drinks them one at a time, then asks for three more. He then proceeds to drink into the wee hours, always in trios of shots.

He becomes a regular customer, and his habits are consistent. After a month, the bartender says, "Frank, I feel like I've known you long enough to ask: what's with the three shots?"
"Well, I have two brothers. Bob on the west coast, and Jim on the east coast. I hardly ever get to see them, but I miss them. So I every time I drink, I drink one for each of us. Just a little thing I do to feel closer to my brothers. I always drink one for Bob, one for Jim, and one for myself."

...

A few months go by, then one night Frank comes in and he doesn't look good. He is pale and sad. He orders two shots of scotch.
Bartender: "Two?"
Frank mumbles, "yeah, two."
After finishing those two, he orders two more. And so it goes, quietly and glumly, until the wee, wee hours.

Finally, the bartender says, "Frank, look, I don't want to pry, but you and I are friends now. Has something happened to one of your brothers?"

"No. Bob and Jim are fine. But I quit drinking."

Those guys do tend to have a stern view of things.

As I was saying, stern tubes are best discussed in the context of a WWII submarine movie.
