Steve,
What a fantastic quote! Here's my personal version I will use for my Grandson:
"There are many points on this Compass Rose. Locate the few that summon you and proceed with a passion, as they are meant for you and will be the ones that will give meaning to your life. And may you always find your way back home with Full Sails and Calm Seas."
Thanks to all for your input and references.

And the miracle happened. Against all odds, the English won.drb9 wrote:But I liked the saying that is attributable to the Spanish Armada, so I made it my autosignature.

Reef Down Day...
This one is from a song by Them Eastport Oyster Boys -- the song is Reef Down Day. I'm typing it from memory, so it may not be an exact quote:

- When the wind blows from the north, sailors don't go forth;
when the wind blows from the east, sailors like it least;
when the wind blows from the south, it blows the bait in the fish's mouth;
when the wind blows from the west, everyone like it best.

For people who still prefer 3 strands
Worm and parcel with the lay
Turn and serve the other way
and an old reliable one for weather:
Mackeral skies and mare's tails
Make tall ships carry short sails

I like, "A ship is safe in harbour, but that is not what ships are made for." Or, "A voyage of a thousand miles starts with weighing your anchor." a take on a Lau-tzu saying I reckon.
Mark, up here on Superior we unfortunately need to say, "Keep the pointy end away from the rocks."

The same goes for anywhere in New England waters and the Pacific Northwest. Anywhere, here's a nice little poem:
"One ship drives east and another drives west,
With the selfsame winds that blow.
'Tis the set of the sails, and not the gales
Which tells us the way to go.
"Like the winds of the sea are the ways of fate,
As we voyage along through life:
'Tis the set of the soul which decides its goal,
And not the calm or the strife."
