Introduction and request for advice from SF Bay sailors

Post by Tim D. »

I recently purchased a Typhoon #1486. She had been kept for the last 20 years on freshwater in Idaho but now is returning to the saltwater of San Fransisco and Monterey. She is in excellent shape with a new main and a newish 170% genny. She also has an original 114% jib.

My question to anyone who sails on SF Bay is, in getting a new working jib for the stiffer winds, what size would you suggest?

Also I am assuming most Ty owners that have to reef regularly have switch from the boom reefing to Jiffy, is that correct?

As a side note I also have a Pearson Ariel (Alberg also) and think I typically use an 80% on those breezy summer days in the Slot.

since it appears there are not many West coast sailors on this forum, Typhoon owners from anywhere, what jib is commonly used in 15 to 20 knot winds?

Hi Tim:
My C&C 27 was sailed in SF bay by the PO. He almost always used a 90% jib, which, like using the 80% on your Ariel, seemed right for the conditions.
