Increasing 25D Storage

Post by Bill »

Hello to all

What does the board think about cutting the hull liner behind the settes (sp), then triming the edges as a means of increasing storage on a 25D? Does this create a "structual" hazard?

Thanks and fair winds
Bill

Bill,

On my CD-25, I created lots of new space. I wanted to free up the space taken up by my head sail bags, so I bought a new roller furling. This, of course, required a nicely cut new 135 genoa to be stored upon it. I took back the space being used by my anchor rode bag and anchor by installing a stainless cast hawser. The space of that white vinyl "steamer trunk" full of old type PFDs was reclaimed by the purchase of new inflatable PFDs. Finally, the space formerly occupied by my wife is now occupied by a small cat.

I wouldn't think that the liner behind the setees would be adding structural stiffness to hull. Still, I would be reluctant to cut it because I wouldn't think you would get much storage space for the effort involved. In my 25D, I did cut the liner and installed a wood lid aft of the water tank in the quarter berth to get some extra storage. That locker is not readily accessible, but it provides some useful stowage for less-used items.

Steve

That is one location I have already identified for a opening hatch for storage. I havent looked at it for sometime, but do you think a starting battery could be placed in that space?????

Also, I am adding an inspection plate in teh foot well on the port sette.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Bill,

The open area rapidly gets shallower as it follows the lines of the hull aft. I'm not sure if you could fit a battery in there with the extra height of a battery box; I think it would be close. Out of curiosity, why do you want to place one in there considering the port platform has room for two batteries?

Bill,

The most effective thing I've done has been to add shelves in the port and starboard forepeak lockers. I wasn't using them as hanging lockers, and anything placed in there was just in a pile, so I put three removable shelves on each side and now I can actually EMPTY those seabags when I board! I used masonite, bordered with pieces of pine for stiffness, and, for supports, small plywood discs screwed or glued onto the bulkheads. Establish your locations and then use cardboard to get just the right shape.

Bill: If you pull out the drawer on the starboard bulkhead to the right of the head doors, you will find a huge space under the head sink. My daughter and I on a cruise from Guilford, CT to Annapolis and back a couple of years ago were able to fill the space with paper towels and all sorts of non-fragile stuff. You can even put a large number of cans of food in there. But you probably have used that space.
