I have a 83 - Cape Dory 28 with a Volvo Md 7B. I re-ringed the engine 10 years ago and it seems to do pretty well. Recently it was having a hard time shifting out of forward - and especially into reverse. Finally it refused to go out of forward at all.
I have pulled the reverse gear - a Volvo MS. The shift shoe is worn -
and replacing it would be easy but the clutch cone is stuck in the forward position.
I will be taking the gearbox to a local shop - but reading past post - it seems that many have had experience DIY with this drive. I only have a cross-section and have never worked on a transmission so I am a little afraid.
The cost of a used one on ebay is $1500 / rebuilt $3000 - seem the used market price has gone crazy on the price of these old units.
Does anyone have an old MD7A or MD7B frozen and lying around?
Or anyone can help me unfreeze the sleeve/cone.
I am less than two weeks away from my annual Turkey Shoot Regatta so I need to do something fast. The transmission does turn smoothly sruck in forward - so I could re-install it - and start in gear - but reverse is nice to use a brake.
