CD25' What outboard fits?
just purchased '81 CD 25' which I am restoring. Its been out of water for few years and outboard is shot. Guy in marina will give me good deal on 5 h.p. 2-stroke Nissan. Anyone know if this is enuf engine to push her. Also the Nissan is not long-shaft, but with engine in well it seems like regular shaft should be ok, any help would be appreciated.

The 5hp Nissan should power you boat in all but (maybe) the most extreme cases. I regular shaft should work with minor modifications to motor mount bracket- in short (pun unintentional)by lowering the motor in motorwell. See Jon Ring's web page for how he installed a regualar shaft- ringj@mediaone.net The advantage of a 5hp regular shaft is portability and storability. Congrads on your CD. Good luck, bill

Re: CD25' What outboard fits?
I forgot to mention, I would definitely get a sail prop for the standard shaft Nissan- usually standard on the long shaft/sailing models- the sail prop will deliver extra thrust needed for a displacement hull boat. billbill willis wrote:Bob,bob kenney wrote: just purchased '81 CD 25' which I am restoring. Re: CD25' What outboard fits?
Bob,
Congrats on your great new boat!
I agree with Bill. The 5hp with a sail prop should move your boat quite well. Be aware that backing these boats up is always tough, regardless of power. I like the 15 inch, but 20" is fine. There are also 25" long shafts. The 20" or 25" may be a bit more tricky to store should you want to keep it in a locker to keep it clean. You can check out my web site below for a better description of how I set mine up at the link below.

Having owned a cd25 for many years a short shaft in rough weather willbob kenney wrote: just purchased '81 CD 25' which I am restoring. Its been out of water for few years and outboard is shot. come up out of the water. Very hard on an engine.

Re: CD25' What outboard fits?
I use a 6 HP short shaft Johnson with a Sail Prop. Works great in up to 30+ MPH winds. My only problem is with ventilation when the motor well is under water because people are in the cockpit. Usually have to put someone the bow and prop hatch open to clear the exhaust from the well.

I also purchased a 25' cape dory. She is powered by a 7.5 HP long shaft. Under power she can be pushed at about 6.5 knots with no headwind. Depending on where you are going to use here you might want to go to an eight, if it will fit in the well. As for the shaft length, you need the long shaft. If your in large seas you are going to have a very hard time with that engine coming out of the water. I think you will really enjoy her once you get her restored. She will be a beautiful sailing yacht.charlie browning wrote:Having owned a cd25 for many years a short shaft in rough weather willbob kenney wrote: just purchased '81 CD 25' which I am restoring.
